Each year, scores of singers are churned out by the many competitions in India. They then go on to record for Bollywood films and are in demand to perform in other countries because of their immense talent.
Today in India the name Shreya Ghoshal stands out as a top playback singer in Bollywood as she has copped several titles during 2011/2012 for the songs Oh La La La, from The Dirty Picture, and Chikni Chamalli, from the film Agneepath. Her voice is heard in the biggest Indian films released in western countries.
Here in TT she remains a chart-topper on the East Indian frequencies. Therefore it is not surprising that 103 FM has decided to present this extremely talented singer to the people of TT in a concert on October 13 at Skinner Park, San Fernando, from 8 pm.
According to executive director of the radio station, Yaseen Rahaman, Ghoshal is on tour of North America and the Caribbean and promoter Tony Ramesar contracted her for the local stage.
“She will be here with her full orchestra and her own dancers from the Bollywood film industry to entertain the people of TT,” Rahaman said, adding that Ghoshal’s voice is as intoxicating as the great Asha Bhosle and she gives life to many of the “item dances” in Bollywood films today.
Ghoshal’s career began when she won the Sa Re Ga Ma Pa contest in India. She was immediately signed up as a playback singing for Devdas, which was to become a highly successful film. She went on to win the National Film Award for Best Female Playback Singer and the Filmfare RD Burman Award for New Music Talent. She has since received many other awards.
Ghoshal was also honoured by the US state of Ohio, with Governor Ted Strickland declaring June 26 as “Shreya Ghoshal Day”. Ghoshal was born to a Hindu family in Durgapur, West Bengal. She grew up in Rawatbhata, a small town near Kota, Rajasthan. Her father, Biswajeet Ghoshal, is a nuclear power plant engineer and her mother is a literature post-graduate. At the age of four, Ghoshal accompanied her mother on the harmonium and later received training in Hindustani classical music from Maheshchandra Sharma in Kota. As a child, she won the children’s special episode of the Sa Re Ga Ma (now Sa Re Ga Ma Pa) contest on Zee TV. She underwent training by Kalyanji for 18 months and continued her classical music training with Mukta Bhide in Mumbai, where her parents had been convinced to move. After graduation she enrolled at SIES College and later studied at the Atomic Energy Central School in Rawatbhata and Anushaktinagar, Mumbai.
Ghoshal caught the attention of director Sanjay Leela Bhansali when she participated in Sa Re Ga Ma Pa for a second time, this time as an adult. In 2000, Bhansali offered her the opportunity to be the voice of Paro, the lead female character of the film Devdas, also featuring Aishwarya Rai. Ghoshal sang five songs in the film and her performance won the Filmfare Award for Best Female Playback Singer. She has also received State Film awards from the Malayalam and Tamil industries and Filmfare awards in several Indian languages including Hindi, Malayalam, Bengali, Kannada, Tamil and Telugu. Ghoshal debuted in the South with the song Yen Chellam in Vasantha Balan’s Tamil film album and received further acclaim after singing Munbe Vaa from Sillunu Oru Kaadhal under composer AR Rahman.
